The Farmyard

In the old farm the outdoors life went on in the farmyard, the wide internal court, calcareous stone paved, called "u bagghiu" in Sicilian dialect.
It was a space where children used to play, but also the crossing trough which the animals passed to go to their cattleshed after the pasture, and also the meeting place for the farmers coming back from the fields.

The farmer's housing

The house of the farmer, called "massaro" in Sicilian dialect, was made up of three rooms:

  • an entrance room, where all the daily life went on;
  • another room that included a wood-burning oven, a cooking area where the "ricotta cheese" was prepared and the "tannura", a burning stove that was utilized to both heating and cooking;
  • a bedroom.
